Four people are presumed dead after a private jet rapidly lost altitude and crashed into the sea.
The deadly plane crash took place in the Baltic Sea just off the coast of Latvia where a private jet “carrying a family” ran into trouble causing it to rapidly lose altitude and crash into the water.
According to the reports, the Cessna plane that took off in Spain was bound for the German city of Cologne. After reaching its destination, however, the plane kept going northeast until it lost altitude and crashed near the Latvian city of Ventspils.
The news was confirmed by the Swedish rescue service which claimed that nobody was visible in the cockpit after a rescue mission was launched.
Meanwhile, Lithuanian authorities confirmed that NATO jets were dispatched in an attempt to intercept the doomed plane after all contact with the plane and the pilot was lost.
As a German news site suggested, an issue with the jet’s cabin pressure – which was noted shortly after take-off – might have played a role in the crash.
“We’ve learned that the plane has crashed (in the ocean) north-west of the town of Ventspils in Latvia. It has disappeared from the radar,” a spokesperson for the Swedish rescue service said.
The authorities further revealed that the Cessna plane crashed into the sea after running out of fuel.
While rescue boats and planes were dispatched to the crash site immediately, no human remains were reportedly found on board.
As of this writing, it is presumed that all four victims are dead.
“We have no explanation at all, we can only speculate, but they were clearly incapacitated on board,” Lars Antonsson of Sweden’s Maritime and Air Rescue Centre said while confirming that the chances the passengers are still alive are slim.
