Four children were killed in a house fire, and only the father and one of the children managed to escape with ‘burn related injuries,’ according to fire officials in Northern Iowa.
The four children were identified as Phoenix Mcluer, 3, Drako Mcluer, 6, Odin Thor Mcluer, 10, and John Michael Mcluer, 12, the Mason City Fire Department said in a press release.
John Michael Mcluer Sr., 55, and his daughter Ravan Dawn Mcluer, 11, managed to escape the fire before firefighters arrived.
The sole survivors were rushed to a nearby hospital but their condition remains unknown at this time.
It is not clear whether the mother of the children was also at home when the fire started.
By the time fire crews arrived, the three-story house had already been engulfed in flames. Firefighters searched the building and found four young boys unresponsive.
The children were rushed to the hospital where they were pronounced dead.
The Mason County Police Department, Iowa State Fire Marshall, and Mason County Fire Department were investigating the cause of the blaze.
It was later determined that the cause of the fire was an electrical power strip on the main floor.
The blaze had been ruled ‘accidental.’
The Mason City Community School District expressed their condolences to the family and community on the heartbreaking loss.
“All of us at Mason City Community Schools are shaken by the loss of our students and extend our deepest sympathies to the family and those closest to them,” said Superintendent Pat Hamilton.
“We have resources that can help parents get through this. If their child is struggling with something, don’t be scared to call your school, teacher, guidance counselor, or school administrator. Those type of people, they are going to do what they can to help.”
