The footage that shows the moment a female police officer overdosed after being exposed to a powerful drug during a traffic stop has been revealed.
In the video released by the Tavares Police Department, Officer Courtney Bannick accidentally ingested fentanyl during a traffic stop on Tuesday.
She was reportedly about to return to the precinct when she suddenly experienced difficulty breathing.
Bannick said, as per Click Orlando: “We made the mindful decision that we’re going to go back to the police department because it was windy. We’ll test [the narcotics] there.
“Sadly, I just never made it there.”
She was wearing surgical gloves while handling the substance. But the moment she started talking, she felt light-headed and just couldn’t breathe.
“I wasn’t getting enough air and I remember kind of wheezing, gasping,” she went on.
A fellow officer noticed right away that something was wrong and quickly administered three doses of Narcan, a lifesaving medication to help reverse the side effects of overdoses in minutes.
Bannick said she didn’t know how she ingested the drug but said it may have occurred when she accidentally touched her face.
“I’m very mindful that I don’t touch my face if I have gloves on, but did I wipe my nose with my wrist? I don’t know.”
She went on: “We’re not dealing with pharmaceutical-grade fentanyl. Every day these street chemists are coming up with something because drug users are building a tolerance to it.”
She also thanked her fellow officers for acting quickly.
“If I was searching that car alone, or testing those drugs alone, or whatever the case may be and I didn’t have Narcan available, there’s a good chance I wouldn’t be here right now,” she added.
