A loving aid worker from Florida has reportedly died after a flesh-eating bacteria swept ashore by Hurricane Ian.
According to reports from local media outlets, the loving father was given the most heartbreaking tributes from his young kids who can’t believe he’s gone.
54-year-old James Hewitt who hailed from Jenison died on October 11 after he contracted Vibrio Vulnificus after falling into a giant canal while working on his friend’s damaged boat.
And that’s when it was believed that the scrape seen across his leg got all infected. And as a result, the bacteria made its way into his bloodstream.
This further led to troubles like sepsis, organ failure, and low blood pressure.
He went to Naples in Florida on October 5 and fell on October 8. By the early hours of the next morning, he got up with the most extreme forms of pain and was rushed to the hospital on that note.
Soon, the hospital rushed to put him on a ventilator and sedated him. Just about two days later, he died. And his family was in a state of absolute shock as everything happened so fast.
During this difficult time, his family was stated to be by his side. At that time, no one heard of the condition or the species. But after hearing about the threat and how they lost their most loved family member, the family is raising awareness on the matter.
“We want people to know that it’s life-threatening and we want them to be aware of it before it’s too late”- Leah Venlet Delana mentioned.
While locals may have known about it, the family had no idea about how significant of a threat it was in Florida. At the moment, the state has registered 65 cases this year and nearly 100 people have been killed as a result of that and Hurricane Ian is to blame.
