AFLW’s first-ever Muslim player will reportedly sit out from the game after she refused to wear the special LGBTQ jersey for the Pride round.
According to local media reports, Haneen Zreika opted to sit out the Pride round after she said no boldly to wearing the LGBTQ jersey, citing religious reasons.
The player who is known for her all-star performances on the Western Sydney Giants football team will not be playing because of her own ideology, it was revealed.
But this has sparked widespread criticism as many felt that every player had the right to practice their religion, while others felt that it was necessary as the round was specifically dedicated to the Pride community and therefore it made sense to wear the special jersey.
The decision was informed by the player to her teammates with the Giants Squad accepting it and supporting her decision on the matter.
Shockingly, a recent poll has gone all the way to suggest how 75 to 80% of the AFLW competition had identified as being LGBTQ.
Zreika is known to have played in the pride round that was reportedly held during last year’s competition and that’s why her sudden stance is being looked upon with plenty of questions.
The Pride round is known to celebrate the great diversity that the game is based upon but last year, the players were not forced to wear the special jerseys.
Other reports revealed how the squad’s first-ever Muslim player even went as far as appearing in a photoshoot for the pride round for all the previous seasons. But for the 2022 edition, she has backed out completely.
