23-Year-Old Female Soldier Was Found Dead On Army Base, Grieving Family And Friends Pay Tribute To ‘Beautiful Girl’


A 23-year-old female soldier who was described as a ‘beautiful girl’ by her family and friends was found dead at an army camp on June 10.

Kent police found the body of Sophie Madden at Overhill Training Center, St. Martin’s Plain, near Folkestone at around 9:35 am.

According to reports, she was pronounced dead at the scene and an inquest into her death was opened.

Assistant coroner Bina Patel said in a statement: “The circumstances surrounding her death were that she was found hanging at Overhill Training Centre, St Martin’s Plain Camp in Kent, on June 10 and died from injuries sustained at the scene.”

Sophie, who was in the 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery, was believed to be a young mother.

Grieving family, friends and colleagues paid to her on social media after her tragic death was announced.

“That is absolutely tragic. Very saddened to hear such terrible news,” one person wrote on Facebook. Thoughts and condolences to her family and friends. RIP young lady, may you rest in peace.”

Another said: “Gut wrenching to hear such sad news R.I.P taken too young. Best wishes to family, friends and colleagues.”

3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery also paid tribute to the 23-year-old: “It is with great sadness that the Regiment must announce the death of Gunner Sophie Madden on 10 June 2022, aged 23. Gunner Madden was a highly valued member of D Battery RHA.

“Her resilience and professionalism were an example to us all, and will live on as her legacy here and across the Gunner family. Our thoughts are with her family and ask that they are given space at this difficult time.”

A spokesperson for the army also said: “’It is with sadness that we confirm the death of Gunner Sophie Madden, 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery. Her death is being investigated and therefore it would be inappropriate to comment further.
