A female deputy was shot and killed by her detective boyfriend moments before he pointed the weapon to himself.
30-year-old Abigail Bieber and her boyfriend Det. Daniel Leyden were on a vacation in St. Augustine, Florida, when the tragic incident unfolded.
Reports reveal that Bieber’s body was found inside a St. Augustine rental home on Sunday morning alongside the body of Leyden, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister has since released a statement and said: “Deputy Abigail Bieber was an outstanding law enforcement officer, and by all accounts an even better person who left a positive impact on every member of her squad and the countless members of our community who she encountered while on patrol.
“This tragedy has left our Sheriff’s Office family grief-stricken.
“There is a void within our hearts that can never be filled, but I hope that Deputy Bieber’s legacy will be the way she lived her life – as a selfless servant.”
Bieber was remembered by her co-workers as an optimistic young woman who never shied away from difficult investigations.
Speaking to the Tampa Bay Times, retired Hillsborough Lt. Andrew Baxter said: “She had the respect of her supervisors, and that’s kind of touch to do when you’re that young in your career.”
The fact that she lost her life at the hands of another officer “was personal on a few different levels,” Baxter said.
“She’s an angel on Earth, essentially, and she was brutally murdered by another one of us.”
Former Hillsborough deputy Erika Delgado described Bieber as a good listener and a good pal, saying: “If you need something, doesn’t matter what, you could just call her up.”
Our thoughts are with Bieber’s family and friends during these challenging times.
