Hero dad and ‘orphan warrior’ with a heart of gold was shot dead by a Russian sniper in Ukraine.
62-year-old Serge Zevlever was a Ukrainian national from St. Louis, Missouri, who helped thousands of kids get a second chance at life.
For decades, the dedicated man traveled between Ukraine and the US, where his wife and two daughters remained, to help arrange adoption papers needed to get children with special needs or those with disabilities adopted by families in the States.
Since children with special needs in Ukraine get transferred to adult psychiatric institutions if they are not adopted by the age of 5, Zevlever worked tirelessly to get as many children as possible a new home in the US before their time ran out.
“My dad knew what would happen if those kids were not taken and given a good home. He fought for those kids just like every single one was his own,” his daughter, Alisa Sander, revealed in an interview with Fox2Now.
Sadly, Zevlever and his family got trapped in embattled Kyiv during their visit after the war with Russia broke out.
While staying at a bomb shelter last week, the 62-year-old ran to the aid of his fellow countrymen after hearing a commotion outside. Once out in the open air, the man was shot dead by a Chechen sniper.
“He was not in a scuffle, he was not on the front lines. He went outside to see if it was safe for everyone else, but they were aiming their guns right at the place where these people were sheltering,” Sander told St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
“At the time, they thought no one was attacking civilians. But this is not true. It was just the most incredible injustice. My dad was such a beautiful human, so the injustice is magnified by a million.”
