A young father tragically died in a freak accident on a Texas highway.
21-year-old Clayton Vaughan was riding in the passenger seat of his girlfriend’s SUV when the couple drove through Texas on Tuesday night.
At around 8.30 pm, a tire came loose and flew from a nearby trailer only to hit the SUV and completely smash the passenger side of the Kia vehicle, killing the young man in the process.
According to the reports, the accident took place on Houston’s Katy Freeway, whereas the couple’s westbound vehicle was struck by a tire originating in the eastbound lanes.
Furthermore, it was revealed that the driver of the vehicle responsible for the loose tire did not stop after the incident. As of this writing, the driver and the vehicle involved have yet to be identified.
Vaughan leaves behind a 4-month-old baby daughter and a grieving girlfriend who did not suffer major injuries in the highway accident.
“I’m not here to place judgement. Things happen, but obviously, negligence of some sort played a role in this. He was a passenger in a vehicle struck by an oncoming tire,” Evan Richard, Clayton’s uncle, said in an interview with an ABC affiliate.
“What are the chances of something like this happening? [You should] know, you are endangering lives around you, and I can’t bring him back. But I can get the message out that you can do better. The city can do better.”
Paying a tribute to his nephew who was looking forward to being a father, the uncle added: “He was a big old teddy bear. He was a young 21-year-old trying to find himself in this hectic world.”
Meanwhile, Clayton’s aunt, Priscilla Stansell, launched a GoFundMe page to raise money for the funeral expenses and her nephew’s young daughter.
Our thoughts are with Clayton’s loved ones during this challenging time.
