The devastated family of Athena Strand, 7, who was allegedly murdered by a delivery driver, is now suing FedEx and one of its subcontractors.
According to CNN, FedEx driver Tanner Lynn Horner, 31, was employed by Big Topspin, Inc.
He was arrested on aggravated kidnapping and capital murder charges after police said that he accidentally hit the young girl with his vehicle while backing into their family home’s driveway to drop a package.
Horner reportedly told police that he had put Strand in the van before taking her life after she said that she would tell her father about the incident.
Her grieving father, Jacob Strand, filed a lawsuit and accused FedEx and Big Topspin, Inc. of gross negligence.
The family is seeking over $1 million in damages.
Strand’s mother, Maitlyn Gandy, said that the driver had been dropping off a You Can Be Anything Barbie doll before the alleged killing.
“Athena was robbed of the opportunity to grow up to be anything she wanted to be – and this present, ordered out of innocence and love, is one she will never receive,” she said at a press conference.
According to an arrest warrant obtained by Daily Mail, Horner led the police to Strand’s body and confessed to abducting and strangling the child to death after accidentally hitting her with the van.
He said that Strand was not seriously injured but he’d panicked when she said that she would tell her father about the accident.
FedEx has responded to the lawsuit and said in a statement: “Our thoughts remain with the family of Athena Strand in the wake of this tragedy. We are aware of the complaint filed against FedEx Ground.”
