The grieving family of soccer player Katie Meyer who was found dead in her dorm at Stanford University said they are ‘brokenhearted’.
Her sister, Sam Perez, took to Instagram Stories to honor the goalkeeper who majored in international relations and minored in history.
“There are no words,” she wrote. “Thank you for all the kindness extended to my family. I’m not ready to post anything big yet. We are broken-hearted and love Kat so much.”
Perez also shared a link to the GoFundMe page set up to help pay for Meyer’s funeral expenses.
“If you would like to help our family during this time, a Gofundme has been started to help with memorial costs. The link is in my bio.
“The outpouring of support is so amazing. Thank you all so much for being here for Kat, our family and her friends.”
It was raised more than $40,000 in only two hours.
Police said that they are not treating Meyer’s death as suspicious. The cause of death hasn’t been released.
It was in 2019 when Meyer gained recognition after she made two critical saves to help the Cardinals win its third NCAA championship.
The NCAA said in a statement shared on Twitter: “We join Stanford in mourning the loss of Katie Meyer. Our condolences to her family, friends and teammates.”
The US Soccer Federation also wrote: “The thoughts and hearts of the entire U.S. Soccer Federation are with the family, friends, teammates and loved ones of Katie Meyer.”
Former Washington state goalkeeper Courtney Worstell also wrote: “You’ll forever be one of the best to do it. I still can’t wrap my head around it, and I don’t want to believe it.”
