An entire family was killed in a massive mudslide that destroyed their home after heavy rainfall.
On Sunday morning, rescue teams were dispatched to Várzea Paulista in Brazil after reports of an enormous landslide that destroyed homes and killed an entire family of five.
According to the local media, parents Ricardo dos Santos and wife Tatiane were among the deceased victims of the mudslide caused by heavy rains in the region.
Succumbing to the force of nature were also the couple’s three young children including Tayane, 1, Nicole, 10, and Richard, 12.
All of the family members were found dead by rescue teams after the landslide destroyed their home at the foot of the hill without a warning.
“It was around 6 am. I had woken up, when out of nowhere the ravine descended from top to bottom. It was all very fast,” a local resident, Reinaldo Pereira, recalled in an interview with G1.
“There wasn’t even time to scream. Many residents saw it and didn’t know what to do for my friend.”
Speaking of the unfortunate family, Pereira added: “I’ve known Ricardo for over 30 years. We grew up together. I’ve lived in this neighborhood for 39 years. I was born here. I’ve never seen that happen. A tragedy.”
According to the reports, some forty firefighters were deployed along with the military police and the São Paulo Civil Defense to assist in retrieving the bodies.
Meanwhile, the São Paulo state reported that at least 19 people were killed over the weekend due to extreme weather.
