The Jury at Lincoln Crown Court must now decide if he is guilty or not on the double counts of murder, as Boulton claims he was suffering from a mental health condition at the time of the incident.

The court heard that Bethany had already filed a restraining order against Boulton at the time of her death after a complaint to police in November 2019. Then a further restraining order was made after another incident in February 2021 but Boulton continued to show up at Bethany’s home and message her.

Jurors were told that the social service was involved with the family after Bethany first reported Boulton for domestic violence in November 2020. Boulton was ordered not to contact his ex-girlfriend but “repeatedly broke” the order, sending her nearly 900 messages on Facebook the weekend before the attack happened.

Prosecutor Katherine Goddard QC told the court that he had developed a hatred for DJ who had autism. The suspect also threatened to wipe out the bloodline of her family before launching into the violent attack.

On May 31, 2021, the day of the attack, he walked 28 miles to her home Skegness to Bethany’s home in High Holmes Road where he repeatedly stabbed her and Darren.

When the Authorities arrived at the property, they found Bethany in the front room and DJ lying on the floor in his bedroom. Ms. Goddard said both had been stabbed and there were also “marks consistent with blunt force trauma”.

Bethany’s family was set to move to an address that Boulton was not aware of just days after the attack and an officer found a 9-month-old baby who was crawling around the house alone and was distressed but physically unharmed.

After the said attack Boulton calmly left the scene before spending the night on the run, and on his way, he broke into an empty cottage where he stole some alcohol, clothing, and food then he left a note saying: “I Daniel Boulton, take full responsibility.”

The next day he was found by an off-duty cop Stephen Dennis who tried to detain him but was stabbed in the leg. He fled Chief Dennis, but was found later and cornered in a barn and was tasered after trying to get some of the armed officers to shoot him. He was arrested after a 24-hours manhunt with the authorities.

Ms. Goddard told the jury there is no dispute he stabbed both victims, but that he claims he was suffering from a recognized mental condition that substantially impaired his ability to form a rational judgment and exercise self-control.

Jurors were told that the relationship between Boulton and Bethany had begun on the Tinder dating app and it had “deteriorated” by the end of March 2019 and he was eventually ordered not to contact his ex-partner.
