The deadly earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria yesterday has left at least 5000 people dead and many more injured.
Now, Turkey’s President has called for a three-month-long period of emergency as the WHO warns that around 23 million people could be displaced as a result of this.
The death toll linked to this disaster continues to increase as we speak as thousands are still buried under the massive amount of rubble that has resulted due to the aftermath of this natural calamity.
But you’ll be horrified to learn how the freezing temperatures mean those buried beneath are less likely to survive the harsh weather conditions, leaving little hope for more survivors as time goes on.
Still, rescuers are racing against the clock to find more survivors as they vow to never give up and continue to look for victims.
Today, shocking images showed a newborn baby being rescued alive, leaving hope for more such miracles to occur as time goes on. Moreover, foreign teams from various nations are making their way to the country as others send planes full of aid to assist during these testing times.
UNICEF says that after the rescue mission to find survivors is over and done with, the bigger challenge would remain to be assisting those displaced. And with so many homes and neighborhoods being razed down to the ground, it makes sense as to why such fears exist in the first place.
Authorities have gone on to speak about how hundreds are even sending messages and voice notes from the exact location where they’re stuck and stranded, hoping someone might come forward and rescue them during this difficult period.
