The police seized eight dogs after the pack attacked and killed the woman who was walking them.
The shocking dog attack took place in the town of Caterham in England where a 28-year-old dog walker was reportedly walking up to eight dogs.
While at Gravelly Hill, one of the animals in her pack lunged at another woman who was walking her pet.
That’s when the 28-year-old intervened and attempted to get the dogs back under control only to get attacked by one or more dogs that she was walking.
“There was no barking – just her screaming. She was being attacked, she was trying to sit up, but with the dogs around her and going for her arms she couldn’t do it. It was a frenzy,” one horrified onlooker recalled.
“Most of them may have been still on their leads. They were tangled round her, meaning she couldn’t stand. It was impossible for them to get away, so in their frenzy they just went for what was in front of them.”
In the attack, the young woman was mauled to death and the police seized eight dogs after arriving at the scene.
As of this writing, it remains unclear how many of the dogs attacked the woman who was walking them. While two of the eight dogs were Dachshunds and one a Leonberger, it is also unclear if these species participated in the attack or not.
Recalling the incident was also a source who claimed two horse riders witnessed the mauling and tried to intervene before the “woman in sheer panic was shouting at the riders ‘go back, go back.’”
As the witness added, one of the riders fell off their horse after some of the dogs charged the horses and scared them off.
“We could hear shouting and screaming. I thought ‘oh my God, this is awful,’” the rider, who has since been identified as 60-year-old Susan Dove, recalled.
Meanwhile, the onlooker suggested the riders couldn’t do anything to prevent the tragedy.
“There was nothing the riders could have done. She just had too many dogs. If they get into a frenzy, you need to be able to control them. If something happens, it’s like having seven small wolves attacking you,” they added.
Following the bloody incident, an investigation has been launched.
“I would like to reassure residents that we are confident all the dogs involved are in the custody of police while we investigate the circumstances,” Inspector Lyndsey Whatley said.
Speaking out was also Richard Bream of Mardens Kennels who said the park where the tragedy happened was commonly used by dog walkers to walk multiple animals at once.
“That particular area is where professional dog walkers will turn up in their van and take their dogs out and walk them,” he said.
“I’ve always felt you see some of these dog walkers have five or six and they shouldn’t be able to do that.”
