A 30-year-old man broke down in tears after being told in court that his fiancée and their unborn baby were tragically killed after the vehicle he was driving crashed into a barrier and utility pole.
Adem Nikeziq has been accused of driving under the influence of alcohol after his SUV split in half in Staten Island, New York on January 29.
The car had been traveling at a very high speed that it split in half, the New York Post reported.
Nikezig was reportedly charged with vehicular assault, criminally negligent homicide, manslaughter, and drunken driving after the incident.
He alleged that another motorist had cut him off and he lost control of the SUV but prosecutors argue that he had been drinking and speeding at the time.
Speaking of his fiancée Sylmetaj, who was heavily pregnant when she tragically died, Assistant District Attorney Nicholas Agostino said: “She was found at the intersection. Her severed leg was found 20 feet past her body. Her unborn child, ripped from her body, was found 20 feet past her leg.”
Only minutes before that, Nikeziq cried as he was told by lawyer Mark Fonte that his fiancée and unborn baby had died in the crash.
Outside the court, the attorney told the New York Post: “No one told him that his fiancee and baby had passed. He found out minutes ago, just before he came out (into the courtroom). When I told him, he broke down crying, sobbing. He was at first completely in disbelief.”
Sylmetaj and Nikeziq were set to welcome their daughter in April, with the woman’s brother Al sharing how excited she was to have a baby.
“She was excited when she learned she was going to be a mother. It was something new to her. She couldn’t wait to see the baby born. They were thinking on names but I don’t think they came to any decision. They were planning on a baby shower,” Al said.
