Taylor Hawkins, the drummer behind the rock band Foo Fighters, has died during a South American tour.
Taylor Hawkins, 50, drummer and a key member of the Foo Fighters, died yesterday, March 25, 2022. Hawkins and the rest of the Foo Fighters were currently on tour in Colombia in South America when Hawkins passed away.
A representative for the band told Rolling Stone that Foo Fighters are currently on tour in South America and were preparing to perform in Bogota, Colombia.
The official cause of death is currently unavailable, but news reports from Colombia mentioned that he was found dead in his hotel room. The band asked for the privacy of his family to be respected.
There were no immediate details on how Hawkins died. Although local media outlets reported that Hawkins had been suffering from chest pain and an ambulance had been called.
Police vehicles, an ambulance, and fans were gathered outside the hotel in northern Bogota where Hawkins was believed to have been staying.
The band announced Hawkins’ passing on their official social media platform saying: “The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins.”
“His musical gift and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever. Our hearts go out to his wife, children, and family, and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect in this unimaginably difficult time,” the post added.
Shortly after the tragic announcement, the band backed out of its scheduled Friday performance at the Picnic Stereo Festival in Bogotá, Colombia.
The band recently played Lollapalooza Chile on March 18 and Lollapalooza Argentina on March 20. They are slated to headline Lollapalooza Brasil on Sunday.
On social media, fans and fellow musicians expressed their condolensces for the musician and spoke of his talent on the drums. Ozzy Osbourne tweeted: “@TaylorHawkins was truly a great person and an amazing musician. My heart, my love, and my condolences go out to his wife, his children, his family, his band, and his fans. See you on the other side.”
Similar statements were released from Ringo Starr, Nickleback and Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, who praised Hawkins’ “unstoppable rock power.”
On Instagram, Miley Cyrus dedicated her March 26 show to Hawkins, sharing a memory of dancing to the Pretenders song “Brass in Pocket” while he played drums.
The band just released their horror-comedy “Studio 666” in February. In the film, the members poke fun at themselves in the haunted house they rented out to work on their 2021 album “Medicine at Midnight.”
Hawkins joined The Foo Fighters in 1997 following the departure of the band’s previous drummer William Goldsmith and has been a member ever since.
He had a heroin overdose in 2001 that left him comatose for two weeks. But he survived the ordeal and came back a better musician and with the Foo Fighters, rose to heights of creativity and success they have never experienced before.
Hawkins has been with the Foo Fighters at the band’s most difficult times. At one point the group only had three members, Grohl, Hawkins, and bassist Nate Mendel. But as a trio, the band still managed to forge on as a band and still managed to make music.
Hawkins’ final concert was Sunday at another festival in San Isidro, Argentina. The band were scheduled to perform at the Grammys on April 3 and were due to begin a new tour of North America in May.
