The 18-wheeler driver who killed four and wounded six others at Colorado’s interstate has been sentenced to 110 years in prison.
According to local media reports, 26-year-old Rogel Aguilera-Mederos received the sentencing on Monday for the fiery crash that resulted in two dozen vehicles piling up.
The accused was reportedly behind the wheel of a semi-truck that was running at the speed of 85mph down the I-70 in Lakewood in Colorado on the 25th of April in 2019. And that’s when he slammed into two dozen vehicles that happened to be stuck in a rush-hour due to traffic.
The severity of the crash resulted in a giant fireball explosion that enveloped so many cars and trucks while killing four innocent people and injuring six others.
Meanwhile, Mederos cried and pleaded in the courtroom, explaining how his brakes failed. But prosecutors failed to listen, adding how he should have made use of a runaway truck ramp a few miles before the site of the crash.
For this reason, he was found guilty of criminal charges and will now be sent to jail for 110 years.
The decision was announced at the county court by Judge A. Bruce Jones who stated how his hands were tied in the matter due to the mandatory minimum laws in the state.
He sentenced the accused to the minimum range available to him on all 27 criminal counts, outlining how they must be served in a consecutive manner.
The driver happened to be working for a Houston-based company during the time of the fatal incident, as he made his way down the interstate with the 18-wheeler that was carrying lumber.
Prosecutors mentioned in the courtroom how his vehicle barreled downwards in an eastward manner on the interstate near the mountains at a horrifying speed of 85mph, right before ramming into the vehicles that resulted in the mega explosion.
