One young woman says she was absolutely shocked and devastated when she found out how innocent-looking dots on her skin turned out to be the most devastating diagnosis ever.
20-year-old Helaina Hillyard was a happy-go-lucky university student who enjoyed playing sports like basketball. She lived a very peaceful and carefree life and that meant ignoring her health and instead focusing on her life’s goals instead.
But to her dismay, she was beyond appalled with grief when small innocent-looking dots started to appear on her skin. At first, she assumed they would actually end up going away but that was far from the reality of the matter.
“They were very similar to freckles and I wouldn’t even care if it wasn’t for my parents who suggested I get it checked, just to be on the safe side”- the 20-year-old explained. And before she knew it, doctors diagnosed them as warning signs of blood cancer.
Just the term cancer left her feeling dizzy as this was not something she had imagined. How can something as innocent-looking as this turn out to be such a major illness was something that continued to cross her mind?
Helaina who hails from Iowa says that the spots immediately began to grow larger in size, in just a few hours. And that’s when she realized that something was not quite right.
The basketball player says she felt they could be bruised as she really takes her sports seriously but after undergoing a series of tests in the hospital’s emergency room, the results showed blood cancer.
“The doctors called these dots petechiae and they symbolize internal bleeding. And before I knew it, I was told to visit an oncologist in another hospital”- the young woman explained.
Now, she’s trying to raise awareness on serious health matters and hopes others can take her life story a listen and never ignore such alarming signs.
