The two pit bulls that killed two young children and left their mother in critical condition have been euthanized.
It was announced by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office that the family dogs, Cheech and Mia, have been put down after the incident at their home in Sylvan Road near Memphis.
According to reports, the dogs were a part of the family for eight years.
The pit bulls fatally attacked 5-month-old Hollace Dean Bennard and his 2-year-old sister Lilly Jane Bennard on Wednesday afternoon.
Kirstie Jane Bennard, their mother, tried to save her children and has been hospitalized since.
The children’s father, Colby, was unharmed. It is not clear where he was at the time of the horrific attack.
A relative took to Facebook and revealed that the attack lasted ten minutes and Bennard ‘never gave up trying to save these babies.’
Speaking to Fox News, Bennard’s best friend Kelsey Gallini said: “That attack lasted longer than any one of us could have ever imagined. I can promise you those children were her world, and if there was any inkling of danger, she would have never had those dogs near her kids.
“Those children were everything to them, and they just have a really long journey ahead.”
The mother was said to be ‘initially confused’ when she finally woke up and is now ‘aware’ of what happened.
Her in-law Jeff Gibson described her as a ‘hero,’ adding that her injuries won’t cause ‘any permanent damage, other than a heart that will never heal.’
Gallini told Fox that the siblings ‘worshipped each other.’
“They were perfect, they were beautiful,” she added.
