Derek Chauvin has been sentenced to 21 years in prison after being found guilty of violating George Floyd’s civil rights.
Last year, the disgraced Minneapolis officer was found guilty of murdering George Floyd by kneeling on his back and neck for several minutes during a botched arrest.
Consecutively, the 46-year-old former police officer was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison.
Now, Chauvin also appeared in a Minnesota U.S. District Court to answer for his federal charge of a violation of George Floyd’s civil rights.
After the defendant was found guilty of civil rights violation, Judge Paul Magnuson handed him a 21-year sentence and told him that he “must be held accountable” for his actions.
The sentence will reportedly run concurrently with Chauvin’s 22-year murder sentence, whereas the judge reduced it by seven months due to time already served.
While Chauvin’s attorney asked for a 20-year sentence, the minimum, the Floyd family’s team argued the former cop should be sentenced to the full 25 years in jail because his actions were needless and cold-blooded.
“My brother was murdered in broad daylight with a knee to his neck for nine minutes. The [Floyd] family and I have been given a life sentence, we will never get George back,” George’s brother, Philonise Floyd, said.
In his remarks, Chauvin failed to apologize to the Floyd family. He did, however, face George Floyd’s kids and said he hopes they will have “excellent guidance in becoming good adults” as he wished them “all the best in their life.”
According to the reports, Chauvin will have to serve at least 15 years in prison before he becomes eligible for parole on good behavior.
It has since also been reported that the murder convict will be transferred from the state prison to a federal one to serve out his sentences concurrently.
