A 37-year-old father was killed in front of her 3-year-old daughter after he asked a man to stop vaping around his child.
Paul Schmidt and his daughter Erica were standing outside Starbucks in Vancouver, Canada, at around 5:30 pm Sunday.
While waiting for his fiancée who went inside to buy drinks, he asked a man not to vape around his daughter. But the killer took out a knife and stabbed the father.
In the video captured by a witness, Paul can be seen dropping to the ground.
His mother, Kathy Schmidt, admitted that she cannot believe her son was killed for just protecting the health of his child.
Speaking to Vancouver Sun, she said: “This is so horribly wrong what happened. He was just trying to protect his daughter. I’m angry and I’m sad.
“It all started because he was vaping beside the baby. Ashley’s in shock — she watched the whole thing. She’s so devastated.”
32-year-old Inderdeep Singh Gosa has been charged with second-degree murder but Kathy has demanded the charge be changed to first-degree.
“He had a knife. I don’t carry a knife into a coffee shop, do you?” she expressed.
The grieving mother said she was shocked that no one in or around the coffee shop rushed to help her son.
“I was incredibly surprised that nobody from inside the Starbucks called for help, nobody outside called for help. It wasn’t until basically he was in dire straits that somebody flagged down an officer on the sidewalk,” she said.
“What kind of world are we living in when you take your family to Starbucks in the middle of the afternoon and you’re attacked and killed, with many people standing around videotaping and watching?”
Police are now pleading with witnesses to come forward to help identify the real motive for the murder.
