A baker who refused to make a cake for a lesbian couple and said making it for them was against her beliefs has won a discrimination lawsuit.
After a years-long battle against the couple, Cathy Miller – the owner of Tastries Bakery in California – announced that a judge ruled in her favor.
It was in 2017 when she refused to bake a wedding cake for the couple, Mireya and Eileen Rodriguez-Del Rio, saying her Christian beliefs were grounds to not make a treat for the two.
Cathy said that she politely refused to bake them a cake and gave them a name of another good bakery instead.
However, Eileen and Mireya were left furious and filed a lawsuit against her, claiming they were being discriminated against.
Announcing her win on Facebook, Miller wrote: “Thank you Tastries friends and family.
“Yesterday, after much consideration and analysis of details regarding the Cathy’s Creations and Tastries Bakery discrimination case, Judge Eric Bradshaw ruled in favor of Cathy Miller.”
The baker said she appreciated everyone’s prayers and support as they continue to make enjoyable treats.
“I’m hoping that in our community we can grow together,” she went on, “and we should understand that we shouldn’t push any agenda against anyone else.”
Her lawyers from the Thomas More Society also called the win in the California courtroom a ‘First Amendment victory.’
According to their website, the organization is a “conservative Roman Catholic public-interest law firm based in Chicago.”
Thomas More Society Special Counsel Charles LiMandri said they applaud the court for its decision.
“The freedom to practice one’s religion is enshrined in the First Amendment, and the United States Supreme Court has long upheld the freedom of artistic expression,” More added.
