Two police officers were shot dead while responding to a fake domestic dispute call.
34-year-old Alex Hamzy and 35-year-old Dustin DeMonte from Connecticut responded to a scene in Bristol after a 911 call asking for help with a domestic dispute.
When the cops arrived at the caller’s location, they were both shot dead by 35-year-old Nicholas Brutcher and his brother Nathan, 32.
Another officer, 26-year-old Alec Iurato, was seriously injured in the shooting and had to be rushed to the hospital for life-saving treatment afterward.
According to the police, the suspect’s emergency call was “a deliberate act to lure law enforcement to the scene.”
They also revealed that Brutcher and his brother, Nathan, both fired on the three officers when they showed up at their home. It is not clear who managed to shoot who and who delivered the fatal bullets.
While Brutcher died on the scene after the exchange of fire, Nathan survived the incident. He was hospitalized, but his current condition remains unknown.
“They answered a call to duty, and they responded without hesitation, and that’s what they did every night before that. And that’s what all our officers do and will continue to do day after day,” Bristol Police Chief Brian Gould expressed.
“Words cannot express the sadness and grief that brings me before you this morning.”
Paying tribute to the fallen heroes was also Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont who ordered flags be lowered to half-staff out of respect for the deceased officers.
“The loss of two officers from the Bristol Police Department who were killed in the line of duty while responding to an emergency call of domestic violence is a senseless tragedy, and my prayers are with their families, loved ones, and fellow officers,” he said.
“This is a devastating reminder of the dangers that police officers face every day to protect our families and neighbors from all kinds of situations.”
Our thoughts are with the families of Alex Hamzy, Dustin DeMonte, and Alec Iurato during this challenging time.
