A college basketball player collapsed suddenly during an NCAA basketball game.
On Saturday, sophomore Imo Essien suddenly collapsed on the court and failed to get back up as his Old Dominion team played against Georgia Southern.
According to the reports, the young man was surrounded by his team and medics after he slowly collapsed on his backside and onto his side.
Fortunately, Essien was able to walk off the court after he was tended to by medical professionals.
“Imo Essien was evaluated by the ODU Athletic Training staff along with the GA Southern medical staff,” Old Dominion confirmed in a statement.
“He was responsive throughout and was able to sit with the team for the duration of the game and drove home with the team. He is in good spirits and will work with the ODU Sports Medicine Staff when they return to Norfolk.”
Following the young athlete’s collapse on-court, Old Dominion won the game with a score of 81-75.
“Old Dominion’s Imo Essien collapsed during play on Saturday but was able to walk off the court and medical staff revealed that he was responsive throughout the entire incident,” sports reporter Jon Root also confirmed.
“No additional medical information is known. Thank God he’s ok.”
According to the latest information, Essien took a Covid test which came back negative. Following the incident, he was also set for a check-up with a cardiologist to determine if he is fit to return to the court.
As coach Jeff Jones said in a statement, Essien’s “vital signs were normal and he never lost consciousness” while lying on the floor.
Our thoughts are with Essien as he continues his recovery.
