Three people from Texas were arrested over alleged neglect of their disabled and bedridden mother.
On Thursday, the police found 57-year-old Patricia Martinez, who is disabled, in “filthy conditions” at her home where she was living with her three adult children.
Following the shocking discovery, the authorities rushed the woman to a San Antonio hospital where she was pronounced dead on Saturday.
The police were reportedly dispatched to the woman’s residence after receiving a report by Adult Protective Services that suggested the lady had an insect outbreak in her room and was suffering from mold growth across her body.
“She was found wearing an adult diaper packed with feces in a dried state where it was physically causing infections in other parts of her body,” Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar told the local media.
Following the disturbing report, the authorities rescued the woman and arrested her three children including 18-year-old Pedro Luis Carrero, 24-year-old Roxanna Carrero, and 37-year-old Oscar Dominguez.
All three adult children have since been charged with a first-degree felony of causing injury to a disabled person with bodily injury. The charges, however, could be further upgraded following the woman’s death.
Meanwhile, Salazar confirmed that all three of the woman’s children were living with her and were her caregivers. It was the children’s legal responsibility to feed and wash their mother as well as provide her with the necessary medication and look after her medical appointments.
“It appeared none of them were doing what they were supposed to be doing,” the sheriff said.
“It’s likely she’s going to pay with her life for their neglect. God have mercy on their souls when their time comes.”
As of this writing, it is unclear whether the woman’s children’s charges will be upgraded to murder, Salazar said.
