A 9-year-old girl who was sold to a 55-year-old man because her father needed money to survive has been rescued by a US charity.

According to reports, Parwana Malik was sold by her father Abdul Malik for $2,100 in sheep, land, and cash to an older man named Qorban in Afghanistan.

Parwana broke down in tears and cried day and night before she was sold.

Her horrific experience drew outrage all over the world, with 24 female senators in the US pushing President Joe Biden to take action and prevent child marriages in the Taliban-ruled nation.

Too Young to Wed, a US-based charity, rescued the girl from the marriage. Her mother and siblings were also moved from a tent in a displacement camp in northwestern Badghis province to a safe house in Herat.

After the heavy criticism, Qorban was also forced into hiding.

Malik also admitted he has faced backlash and was forced to change the entire story in an attempt to save his reputation.

Two weeks after the sale, the 9-year-old girl was finally returned to her family but the $2,100 is still owed to the 55-year-old.

After her rescue, Parwana said: “I am really happy. They rid me from my husband and my husband is old.”

Her mother Reza Gul also said that she tried to stop her husband from selling their daughter.

“Of course, I was angry, I fought him, and I cried. He said that he didn’t have any option.”

Speaking to CNN, the charity’s founder Stephanie Sinclair said: “This is a temporary solution. Really what we’re trying to do is prevent girls being sold into marriage.”
