Cher’s mother Georgia Holt has passed away at the age of 96.
The tragic news was announced by Cher, 76, who revealed that her “mom is gone” without providing many details in her heartbreaking Twitter post.
Georgia Holt was an American singer-songwriter, actress, and model who started performing as a child and won multiple beauty and talent awards at a young age.
In the first decades of her career, Holt appeared in a number of minor film and television roles and went on to perform in Phil Moore’s ‘Get Your Act Together’ in the late 1970s.
Since then, she also appeared in Mike Douglas’ talk shows, a game show called Card Sharks, and was the main star of the 2013 documentary ‘Dear Mom, Love Cher’.
In 2013, Holt also released her 1982 album Honky Tonk Woman decades after it was recorded. Since then, she appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
While the official cause of death is yet to be confirmed, Cher previously revealed that her mother was hospitalized over pneumonia and recurring health issues.
“Sorry I’ve Been Mia. Mom’s Been Sick Off & On. She Just Got Out Of Hosp. She Had Pneumonia. She’s Getting Better,” the ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’ hitmaker wrote in September.
On the following day, she added: “Home is the Best Medicine For Her… She’s Getting Better. Thank All Of You For Your Prayers.”
Cher previously also paid a tribute to her mom after the documentary which she executive-produced aired on Lifetime.
“My mom is exactly like Rocky. She never gives up!” the singer said back in 2013 after the documentary revealed her mother had almost aborted her following pressure from her own mother. Despite being just 19 and freshly separated from her husband at the time, Holt decided to push through with the pregnancy and raise Cher alone.
Our thoughts are with Cher and the family during this tragic time.
