A 71-year-old man was killed after a three-car smash in California that left a Ferrari split in half.
Robert Nicoletti, a retired dental salesman, tragically died when his supercar crashed into a blue Toyota and a silver Mazda SUV on Friday.
The incident occurred in Santiago Canyon, near the town of Silverado.
California Highway Patrol were called to the scene around 3:40 pm and found cars mangled and smashed, with the Ferrari sliced in two.
Dirt was thrown down the hillside and debris was scattered on the road.
Authorities said they think there was no alcohol involved but high speed could have been a factor as the Ferrari accelerated in an attempt to prevent another car behind from overtaking.
According to reports, the other two drivers suffered minor injuries. The Toyota and Mazda were damaged in the front but the Ferrari was barely unrecognizable.
Anselmo Templado, a public information officer for the California Highway Patrol, said that the 71-year-old driver sustained fatal injuries as he was ejected from his car.
Nicoletti was reportedly driving too fast and could not navigate a turn on Santiago Canyon Road, crashing into the Mazda SUV and blue Toyota.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sgt. Kris Ulibarri with the CHP’s Santa Ana Office said: “Speed was probably a factor. We’re still investigating, but as you can see the Ferrari is split in half.”
New electronic signate showing the speed of passing vehicles had been installed earlier this year after a series of accidents, The Orange County Register reported.
According to the paper, the 11-mile road had seen six deadly accidents in just seven weeks in 2016.
