Trans media personality and former Olympic athlete Caitlyn Jenner slammed the NCAA for allowing Lia Thomas to go home with a gold medal.
On Thursday, trans UPenn swimmer Lia Thomas was titled champion after dominating over her competitors in the 500-yard freestyle in Atlanta, Georgia.
Following her win, however, the 22-year-old pressure has been facing criticism from people who believe she had an unfair advantage over competitors who were born female.
Among the critics was also trans advocate Caitlyn Jenner who insists that trans people should not be excluded from sports but argues that certain restrictions should be set.
While explaining she has no problem with Thomas or any other trans athlete, Jenner slammed the NCAA for allowing the controversial win to take place.
“[She was] playing within the rules. What I’ve said from the beginning [is] the rules aren’t tough enough. Just being on testosterone depressants for a year or two, whatever the rules are now, they keep changing, obviously, it is not enough,” Jenner said on Fox News.
Caitlyn went on to accuse Thomas of holding back in order to avoid breaking the world record which was set by Olympian Katie Ledecky.
“Lia Thomas just dominated in the pool, and I’m sure she took it quite easily because she did not want to win by too much,” she added.
“I think she was probably taking it very easy in the race because she knew the world was watching, and she’s just going to go fast enough to be able to win the race.”
While critics have been taking a jab at her win, Thomas remains determined to continue following her dreams and ignoring backlash.
Following her big win in Atlanta, the young athlete delivered a defiant speech as she spoke to Olympian Elizabeth Beisel after being greeted by the crowd with complete silence.
“I try to ignore it as much as I can, I try to focus on my swimming what I need to do to get ready for my races and I just try to block out everything else,” Lia said after being asked by ESPN about her thoughts on the people’s response to her victory.
“It means the world to be here, to be with two of my best friend and teammates and be able to compete.”
