You may have come across some pretty unique stories about people getting busted at airports for smuggling drugs but this next incident is definitely in a league of its own.
A woman was recently found guilty by airport officials for carrying a staggering 28 pounds of cocaine that was hidden inside the wheels of her wheelchair. She acted as if she was debilitated and needed the wheelchair to help herself get transported from one place to another.
Therefore, she tried to evade the security officials by popping the drugs inside the wheels but as you can expect, that trick didn’t go unnoticed at JFK airport.
Moreover, Federal agents knew this whole time that something was not right about Emelinda Paulino de Rivas after her arrival at the New York City airport. The flight she was on was coming from Punta Cana that’s located in the Dominican Republic, as confirmed by the US Customs and Border Protection.
The main clue that revealed it all had to do with the fact that the wheelchair was not rotating in a regular fashion. And that’s when they knew immediately that something was up.
On that note, the authorities opted to take an x-ray of the four large rubber wheels of the wheelchair. This highlighted the presence of a staggering 28 pounds of cocaine. The estimated cost was outlined to be a staggering $500,000 and those were stuffed inside bags as recently confirmed by Federal Agents.
The suspect was identified to be an official hailing from the Dominican Republic and she was immediately taken into police custody. Moreover, she was even charged with several accounts linked to Federal Narcotics smuggling.
Now, investigations are taking place between the US and the Dominican Republic authorities to determine who is behind the entire ordeal of importing drugs into both of these nations.
