At least 34 people died as a result of a bus swerving off a bridge and plunging over one hundred feet into the valley below.
The tragic accident took place in Tharaka Nithi County, Kenya, where a Modern Coast passenger bus veered off a bridge and plunged some forty yards deep while on the way from Meru to Mombasa.
According to the local media, emergency responders already rtrieved 34 bodies including two children.
At least 11 people who survived the crash were immediately rushed to the hospital.
While the details of the Sunday tragedy remain unclear, it is believed that a brake failure was responsible for the bridge veering off the bridge and falling into the river valley beneath.
The investigators suggested that the bus driver was unable to control the speeding vehicle and prevent it from skidding off the sharp turn on the bridge.
“Up to now, we have lost 14 women, 18 men and two girls, so the total deaths are 34,” Nobert Komora, a Tharaka Nithi County Commissioner, revealed in an interview with NTV Kenya.
“We have rescued 11 who are undergoing treatment in hospital.”
Following the incident, all Modern Coast buses were ordered to suspend their operations until the investigation is complete.
As of this writing, it is unclear if the alleged brake failure is an isolated incident and, if true, what was the cause of it.
According to Kenya’s National Bureau of Statistics, a 15% increase in road accidents has been noted in 2021 as compared to the year 2020.
