At least twenty people were killed and nearly a dozen more were injured after a bus crashed into another vehicle and caught fire.
The shocking accident took place in Punjab, Pakistan, where a bus traveling from Karachi to Islamabad plowed into a parked van before bursting into flames.
According to the reports, the bus was carrying at least 40 passengers of which twenty or more were killed in the fire.
Several people were also left in critical condition while an additional 11 passengers suffered some kinds of injuries while trying to escape the burning vehicle.
As of this writing, the crash remains under investigation and the death toll is expected to rise by the time everyone is accounted for.
Meanwhile, a preliminary investigation revealed that the bus caught fire after slamming into the van that was carrying fuel drums in the back.
Upon collision, the fuel tanks ignited resulting in a massive fireball that engulfed both the bus and the van.
The police also confirmed it was possible the bus hit the van parked at the side of the road after the driver dozed off.
“We are investigating whether the bus driver fell asleep as the time of accident or the crash took place because of over speeding,” senior officer Fahad Ahmed said.
The police further revealed that the damage done to some of the passengers was so extensive that DNA analysis would be required to identify them.
Our thoughts remain with the victims of the fatal Punjab accident during this challenging time.
