The Buffalo shooter who killed ten people on Saturday allegedly apologized to one of his victims after realizing that the man was white.
On Saturday afternoon, 18-year-old suspected white supremacist Payton Gendron opened fire at the Tops Friendly supermarket in Buffalo, New York, and killed ten people in the process.
Among the people who lived to tell the tale was 55-year-old Christopher Braden who was shot in the leg by the gunman.
As Braden’s friend now revealed, the father-of-two raced towards the storefront and tried hiding between two cash registers after being shot in the leg.
Gendron eventually found Braden and pointed his semi-automatic rifle at him. Believing he would die right there and then, Braden allegedly screamed ‘no’ and covered his face with his hands.
To his surprise, the shooter then said ‘sorry’ and walked away, DailyMail.com reported.
As Braden’s friend told the publication, Gendron likely apologized and walked away after realizing that his victim was white.
According to the reports, 11 out of 13 people the 18-year-old shot were black.
“The guy could have literally shot him dead – but he didn’t,” Braden’s friend, Sue Trala, revealed to DailyMail.com.
“Christopher is trying to put on a brave face and make light of it but he’s probably going to have survivor’s guilt for the rest of his life – just because he’s white.”
Trala also explained that her friend remains in hospital where he will have to undergo a total of at least three surgeries after suffering a shattered tibia.
“He’s coherent but he’s had major surgery on his left leg and he’s going to have at least two more surgeries,” Sue added.
“The bullet went in and came out, leaving a pretty big hole. They think it was a hollow point.”
She continued: “From what he’s said, he heard the shots and ran up to the front of the store. He saw the guard getting shot right in front of him but he didn’t even realize he had been hit in the leg.
“It was only when he was laying on the ground between the registers that he realized he had been shot. He looks up and sees the shooter pointing his gun at him but then he just says sorry.
“It’s because he was white – there is literally no other explanation. The kid knew what he was doing, he was well trained, but he took the decision not to shoot.”
