Two young boys were killed when their speeding uncle crashed into a tree in Sydney, Australia.
33-year-old Jimmy Martin Brito was charged with two counts of dangerous driving resulting in death and one count of causing bodily harm by misconduct after losing control of his car.
At the time of the incident, the man’s daughter, 9, was sitting in the passenger seat while his two nephews, 9-year-old Peter and 10-year-old Xavier Abreu, were sitting in the back.
In the crash, both boys suffered fatal injuries. The girl and her father are expected to survive.
According to the preliminary investigation, Brito was speeding when he lost control of his Subaru WRX. The police are also probing the possibility that he was street racing after another car – whose driver has yet to be identified – was filmed fleeing the scene after the crash.
Following the tragic incident, the boys’ father and stepmother spoke out and paid tribute to their sons.
“We have lost our sons and our two other boys have lost their brothers along with the rest of the family who are suffering,” Jivonne Garrido, the stepmother, said.
She went on to brand the boys as “fun-loving” before urging the public to take road safety seriously and “to take this situation as a lesson to show how a motor vehicle is not a toy.”
Garrido also set up a GoFundMe page to help the family with medical and funeral expenses arising from the tragedy.
“The beautiful boys lost their lives in tragic circumstances however their memories will live on forever with the family Father Samuel Mother Olivia, brothers Alex and Jacob along with Auntie Joanne and Grandmother Dimitria,” she wrote.
“We thank everyone who has already shown the size of their hearts with heartfelt messages and flowers at the site and call for assistance from the public that this event may resonate with. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
