A young boy was left fighting for his life after suffering a severe brain injury in a freak trampoline accident.

8-year-old Leeland Havensek from Carlsbad, California, was playing with the kids on the trampoline as the family celebrated his brother’s birthday when he and his younger sister collided.

Following the accident, the boy’s family frequently checked on the two children to make sure they didn’t have a concussion or suffer any unwanted injuries in the blow.

While the kids went on having fun like usual, the family was in for a big shock when Leeland suddenly suffered a seizure and became unresponsive later on the same day.

After calling 911, the boy was airlifted to a hospital in San Diego where he was placed in a medically induced coma when doctors discovered he had suffered a brain injury.

“They said this is actually very serious and we’re not sure if he’s going to make it,” the boy’s heartbroken mom, Maggie, said in an interview with KTLA.

“They made that decision to act ahead and remove the skull to let the brain expand and swell without causing secondary damage. Everything they did was amazing and he’s responding really well.”

As the doctors confirmed, the boy was left with a serious brain bleed and a blood clot large enough to cause a stroke.

Fortunately, his condition began improving almost immediately after he underwent two emergency surgeries.

One of the boy’s teachers, Melanie Lupica, has since started a GoFundMe page to help Leeland’s parents, Maggie and Casey, with the medical expenses arising from the accident.

“Leeland was playing with his sister Wednesday evening and a freak accident happened resulting in a hemorrhage of his Middle Cerebral Artery. This caused an epidural hematoma and an MCA Watershed Stroke,” the 3rd-grade teacher wrote.

“Since Wednesday, he has received multiple surgeries at Rady’s Children’s Hospital to relieve the pressure on his brain. These included the removal of a blood clot and part of his skull. Though permanent damage has already been done to the right side of his brain, the current efforts are to protect and save the rest. He is in a medically induced coma to give his body time to heal.”

Lupica also branded the young boy as a “bright student and a caring friend” as well as an “incredible athlete and a loving brother.”

In an update, the teacher added: “Leeland is starting to slowly wake up. They are removing medicines and watching how he reacts. His family is with him and he is starting to show signs that he can hear them. We are hopeful great news is ahead.”
