A one-year-old boy has tragically died while three other children have been hospitalized after they ate and took a nap at a New York daycare.
According to the New York Post, the boy was declared dead at Divino Nino Daycare in Kingsbridge Friday afternoon.
While the cause of illness and death has not yet been determined, the children possibly ‘ingested fentanyl.’
The children ate around 1pm before they took a nap but when they were supposed to wake up at 2:30 om, many of them were unresponsive.
A baby girl and a 2-year-old boy were rushed to Montefiore Medical Center. The boy is in critical but stable condition while the girl is expected to survive.
A fourth child was taken to Bronx Lebanon Hospital and is also expected to survive.
Police and firefighters responded to the scene and wore breathing apparatus when they entered the daycare as crews initially thought that they were responding to a carbon monoxide leak.
But a contamination tent was later set up outside the daycare, which operates in a basement of a building.
The daycare opened only a few months ago and caters to children between 6 weeks and 12 years old.
Police are still investigating whether the children ingested fentanyl or another substance.
Neighbor Mel Ramirez said she heard a daycare staff screaming in horror.
“She was yelling for help,” Ramirez said. “She was screaming and saying, ‘The kids are dead! The kids are dead!’ multiple times.”
Ramirez then went outside and saw one child unresponsive and a crying woman trying to help another unresponsive child.
“They were jut pale and unresponsive,” she expressed. “(One of the children’s) mouth was, like, open. I was like, ‘Oh my God. I can’t do anything about it either.”
