The incident unraveled in November 2022 when the boy was just ten years old, and it was now confirmed he was found competent to answer for his act as an adult.

While two psychologists working on the case disagreed on whether or not the boy understood court proceedings, Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Jane Carroll ruled that he was competent to proceed.

“He knew his case was in adult court, he knew that his case was a felony, he knew that there were two types of cases – felonies and misdemeanors, he knew it was serious,” prosecutor Sara Waldschmidt said.

Meanwhile, the boy’s family spoke out and revealed that the boy claims not to remember the shooting. He previously told the police that he wanted to shoot the wall to scare his mother and that she got shot after stepping in front of the gun.

The family also claims that the boy is only thinking about his gadgets and that their conversations always end up in those waters.

“When he calls, he’s just like, ‘Make sure all my tablets and laptop and everything of mine is properly packaged,’” aunt Rhonda Reid said.

The boy’s grandmother, Lueritha Mann, added: “I hope I do [talk to him] one day, but right now no. He took something very precious from me. I can’t believe he did it, he needs to pay for what he’s done.”

As per Wisconsin state law, children as young as ten can be charged as adults for serious crimes. If convicted, the boy faces up to 60 years in prison.
