A young boy died in a horrific mini-motorbike accident while riding the vehicle together with his older cousin.
4-year-old Lennox Railton Craggs from Bishop Auckland, England, was a motorbike enthusiast who was looking forward to trying out his 7-year-old cousin’s new 50cc Yahama.
As the Crook Coroners’ Court heard, the young boy was sitting at the back of the motor while his cousin was driving it under supervision.
Later, Lennox allegedly asked his cousin to have a turn at driving her mini-motorbike.
While she told him he needed to wear protective gear first, the boy excitedly jumped to the front and took the control of the bike from his cousin.
While the boy’s father immediately charged toward the youngsters, he could not stop them before the 4-year-old hit the accelerator lever.
After riding over rough ground with bumps scattered all around for a few seconds, Lennox crashed the motorbike into a metal post used to prevent cars from driving on the field.
Upon the collision, the boy was sent flying from the motorbike and landed on the ground. He suffered severe abdominal injuries and was airlifted to the RVI in Newcastle where he died shortly after suffering a cardiac arrest.
“Lennox was described as a little boy who liked motorbikes and liked quad bikes. He had been quad biking with his family the day before. His parents described that he was excited about the new bike and immediately asked if he could ‘have a go’ on it,” Detective Inspector Leanne Green told the court.
“He was told that he would have to wait until the time was right and that he would have to wear his protective equipment.”
Speaking of the events that followed, the inspector added: “Lennox has pushed [his cousin] and headbutted her in the tummy to get on the front.
“He has sort of squirmed his way between her arms. Although he was four and his cousin was seven, he is described as being very strong and she was very slight.
“He has pulled the lever to make it go faster and it has taken off. His father, Michael, has been alerted and he has run after the motorbike. It has traveled in a diagonal direction onto the Tarmac. As the bike has gone over a small bump the rear wheel has been seen to wobble. Michael described seeing Lennox come off the bike and hit the vertical metal post.”
Weighing in on the accident was also Assistant Coroner Dr. Leslie Hamilton who ruled that the young boy’s death was an accident that happened “quickly and spontaneously before it could be prevented.”
“Despite all of the entirely appropriate and entirely heroic efforts to save his life, none of that was successful,” Dr. Hamilton said.
“The reality is that nothing was going to make difference. In terms of a conclusion as a coroner, no one intended this to happen. It was something that happened quickly and spontaneously before it could be prevented.”
