A 9-year-old boy who survived a helicopter crash that left him critically injured has been taken off life support.
Leon de silva from Geelong was placed in an induced coma in Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane after the Sea World helicopter crash that took the life of pilot Ash Jenkinson and three passengers.
According to reports, he is now in stable condition.
Three other passengers who were also critically injured included his mother Winnie, 33.
On Thursday, Leon was taken off life support, with a Queensland Health spokesperson saying to Daily Mail: “It’s a bloody miracle.”
Another boy, Nicholas Tadros, 10, was also left injured and remains on life support. His mother Vanessa, 36, tragically died in the crash.
Leon was rushed to hospital on Monday and had to undergo numerous surgeries to stop internal bleeding.
His stepfather, Neil, has confirmed that he is now in a stable condition.
Speaking to the Herald Sun, he said: “We’re just focusing on their recovery now.
“The main issue is the extensive injuries that he (Leon) has. He’s lying in bed at the moment. He is still laying with his eyes closed and not able to talk or communicate at this stage.”
Mr. de Silva said that his sister Julie has been staying at Leon’s bedside.
“Nurses told Julie yesterday that he could hear us talk so she videoed Winnie.
“Winnie was able to talk directly to Leon and as she was saying “Mum’s here and everything’s going to be alright”… he actually managed to give her a thumbs up, so that was fantastic news yesterday.
“Both are fighting on and we’re going to have a long battle ahead of us.”
This comes after Mr. de Silva broke down in tears while sharing update about his stepson’s condition.
He previously told the Today show: “Leon’s the worst at the moment, he’s in an induced coma because of the head trauma and trauma on the brain.
“Our major concern is Leon, when they wake him up, that he’s okay. I’m just doing what I can for them, I’ve got no choice.”
