A young boy who accidentally killed his mother in their Alabama home confessed to shooting his mother after he initially claimed that an intruder ended her life.
29-year-old Ayobiyi Cook, a registered nurse, was found dead in their home on the 2400 block of Freemont Avenue on August 6.
Her son had told detectives that an intruder shot his mother and then fled the scene.
Deputy Chief David Agee said that the 12-year-old boy made up a story that investigators determined “was not possible.”
“After investigation, Sheriff’s Detectives were able to determine that the victim’s 12-year-old son unintentionally discharged a firearm striking his mother causing her death,” he said.
After further probing, the terrified youngster finally told them the truth.
“The child eventually gave a true account of what happened,” Agree continued.
“Evidence on the scene supports that the shooting was unintentional and the offense will be addressed through the Family Court system. The family has been cooperative throughout the process and the child will remain with them.”
The child initially told police that he had seen an intruder running away from their home. His father, an officer with the Birmingham Police Department, was working at the time of the accident, Birmingham Real-Time News reported.
“This offense is tragedy for the Cook family and the entire community,” Agee added.
The funeral for the mother will be held at the Faith Memorial Chapel in Bessmer, Alabama.
