The police officials are doing their best to solve the case of a man and a boy who was found dead at their home.
Landon Hayes, 10, and Tyrus Lathem, 22, were found dead after a shooting in Lexington Sunday afternoon. Investigators claim that Lathem pulled the trigger.
Authorities said that they are investigating the deadly shooting incident as a murder-suicide with the Coroner of Fayette Country confirming the deaths of Hayes and Lathem.
Police said officers responded to the 500 block of N. Upper around 11:50 a.m. after receiving a call for shots fired. When officers arrived, they found a 22-year-old man and one young boy dead inside a house. Both were shot.
The Coroner’s report states that Hayes died in a homicide and that Lathem died by suicide. Officials say the relationship between the two people is unknown at this time. Reports say that the home belongs to Hayes’ mother.
Gary Ginn, Fayette County Coroner said: “My office was called by 911 at 12:01, just shortly after lunch. It’s a sad situation, what we have in an apparent murder-suicide. They believe that the 22-year-old Tyrus Lathem shot and killed 10-year-old Landon Hayes, then Lathem shot and killed himself.”
Lt. Dan Truex said: “It’s unclear what led to the shooting or how the incident unfolded. I don’t believe that we’re ever going to know exactly what happened because the two individuals primarily involved have both died. A third person was in the home but not involved in the shooting.”
Ginn has not released information regarding the relationship between Lathem and Hayes at this time. Authorities already blocked off the intersection of N. Upper St. and W. Sixth St. while they investigated what led to the shooting.
According to Lexington police, loved ones cried outside a North Upper Street home as the Fayette County coroner and dozens of city police, firefighters, sheriff’s deputies, and other officials showed up to investigate the incident that left two people dead.
Followed by more prayers, tears, and family holding onto each other for any support they can find, Minister Ronnie Woolfolk leads those gathered outside of the home in a sermon as he grapples with the tragedy himself. He has been a close family friend of Hayes and his mother for years.
Minister Woolfolk said: “We’re holding on to what we know. We’ll remember Landon by Landon. Landon was no ordinary kid. Landon was Landon.”
As family members grieved outside the house where the bodies were found Sunday afternoon, and officials brought local chaplains and other resources to the scene to comfort them.
