9-year-old Abdul Razack Tarawaley was playing with his friend, 12, and another child in the garage of an apartment complex in Melbourne, Australia, when the pair got pinned between the heavy door and its metal grate.

According to the reports, the two boys were lifted off the ground after the door suddenly swung upward. As the boys hung onto the moving door, they were pulled into the opening between the door and the frame and crushed in the process.

Hearing their screams and pleas for help, Abdul’s father, who is also named Abdul Razack Tarawaley, rushed to the garage and attempted to pull down the door to little avail. Other residents also gathered at the scene and tried to help save the boys.

Unfortunately, Abdul could not be saved due to the extent of injuries he had suffered. His friend was rushed to the hospital where he remains in serious condition.

“I was thinking they are playing hide-and-seek but when I get there I see blood running out of my son’s mouth,” the boy’s grieving father recalled in an interview with Seven News.

“Then the other boy was saying ‘Help me God, Help me God.’ I checked the head and I checked the fingers (of Abdul). All is cold.”

Breaking into tears, he added: “He’s so cute, he’s so sweet and I miss him so much. God gives and God takes, so we just have to accept it.”

As an investigation into the incident confirmed, the children didn’t have the card that activates the door. It is possible, however, that the third child involved pushed the emergency button to raise the door while Abdul and his friend hung onto it as part of their playtime.

After the incident, a family friend claimed the door had no override function that would allow the trapped children to be released.

Housing Choices Australia, however, has since confirmed that the door was inspected and that it is “operationally sound and complies with standards.”

“Our deepest sympathy goes out to the children, their families and everyone involved. As a community housing provider, we are supporting the families and residents affected by this tragedy,” a representative said.
