A 5-year-old boy who was high on coca*ne fatally shot his younger brother in their apartment while their father was asleep.
According to reports, Isiah Johnson, 16 months old, had mar*juana in his system when he was shot by his brother at their family home in Lafayette, Indiana.
Parents Shatia Tiara Welch, 24, and Deonta Jermaine Johnson, 27, have been charged with neglect and drug charges after police searched their home.
Officers said baby Isiah tragically died from a gunshot wound to his head. He tested positive for mar*juana while his 5-year-old brother had coca*ne in his system.
Their father, Johnson, was asleep in their apartment when the incident occurred.
Authorities said that the children’s mother, a nursing graduate, was not at home when the shooting happened.
Johnson initially told officers that Isiah was injured by his sibling or fell as he tried to deny owning a gun.
The father claimed that the 16-month-old had not been shot before finally revealing that Welch had a gun.
The mother then confirmed she was the owner of the weapon but said to police that she usually kept it locked inside a box under her bed.
While searching the home, police found a gun in the box under a bed but also discovered a gun in a dresser.
93 fentanyl pills, mar*juana, and drug paraphernalia were also found inside the flat.
Both Johnson and Welch were arrested, with the mother taking to social media to post how much she missed her baby.
“I wish heaven had visiting hours cause Isiah I’m missing you not a day go by mommy don’t think about you,” she wrote.
“I miss you soo much I’ll give it all up just to hold you again to tell you I love you just to smell you more time what is life without you.”
The pair remain in custody and await extradition to Lafayette. They are facing up to 40 years in prison, and a fine of $10,000 in relation to felony neglect charges.
