The Lake County, Illinois, State’s Attorney said that police were initially told that the 6-year-old was missing. However, an investigation turned to the family’s home ‘after the family’s story was contradicted.’’

It was on January 5 when Damari was reported missing by his mother and his brother, 20-year-old Jeremiah Perry. They told police that he may have vanished in Skokie, Illinois, where he and his sister, 16, were driven to a party, NBC 5 Chicago reported.

When authorities questioned them, investigators uncovered contradictions in their story based on evidence they discovered in Skokie.

They also interviewed some juvenile witnesses at the Lake County Children’s Advocacy Center, who eventually led them to find the young boy’s body near an abandoned home in Gary.

Jannie, Damari’s mother, has been charged with first-degree murder, obstructing justice, and concealment of a homicidal death.

Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said in a statement: “Our hearts ache over the murder of 6-year-old Damari Perry. We would not have reached the awful truth of this case without the work of the FBI, the North Chicago Police Department and the investigators and staff at the Lake County Children’s Advocacy Center.

“Prosecutors, investigators and victim support professionals worked late into the night and into the early morning to make sure we understand this tragic crime,’ he continued. ‘Now, because of their rigorous and detailed investigation, we will be able to bring Damari’s killers to justice in a courtroom.”
