An 8-year-old boy has tragically died after being shot by his 10-year-old brother while they were at their family’s apartment complex in Houston.
According to reports, their 13-year-old brother was also at home when the shooting incident occurred and he was the one who called 911 right away.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzales confirmed that the parents were not at home when the incident happened on Monday at the Bear Creek Apartments in the 5500 block of Timber Creek Place.
“These situations are preventable. Children should never have access to weapons. Anything could happen,” Gonzales said.
“We’ve talked in the past about the importance of safe storage, securing weapons, responsible gun ownership. This appears to be a tragic situation of what could happen when that doesn’t occur.
“Our condolences out to the family. They’re extremely devastated by what has occurred here this afternoon.”
Daniela Hurtado of ABC13 said that the mother of the boys was seen calming the 10-year-old while their grieving father was crying on the ground.
Police are now investigating whether the weapon was loaded by one of the siblings and who owned it.
The children are reportedly not yet enrolled in school after moving from Venezuela to west Houston only a few months ago.
Officers were seen carrying bags out of the apartment block and taking them to Crime Scene Unit van.
Speaking toClick2Houston, neighbor Kendra Davis said: “As a parent, no one should ever have to go through that.
“It’s horrible that this is happening on a daily basis. Something needs to be done. It’s out of control.”
