The grieving mother of an 18-year-old boy who was killed by a drunk driver while he and his friend were driving home from his 18th birthday celebration has spoken out.
Riley Danard and his friend Khalea Theouk, also 18, both died after a ‘drunk and high’ man drove 100mph on the wrong side of the road.
Delfino Lopez-Morales, 36, has been charged with two counts of vehicular homicide. According to court papers, he was in the wrong direction on the West Seattle Bridge while driving 55 miles over the speed limit.
Emergency services and police rushed to the scene but both teens were dead.
Police found that Lopez-Morales’ blood alcohol content was 0.14 – almost twice the legal limit, and his THC level tested at 2.8. Officers also discovered an empty bottle of beer in his passenger seat.
The suspected drunk driver is now recovering from his injuries.
Grieving family and friends spoke with KING 5 after the incident and said that their community will never be the same.
Riley’s mother, Kristie Danard, said: “I will never get over the loss of my sweet son Riley and his best friend Khalea. This is a nightmare I’ll never wake up from.”
“He was the kindest, most gentle, and loving young man with an incredibly bright future. Riley and Khalea were the most amazing people you could ever meet. They loved each other so much,” the mother continued.
“The world has lost two incredible people. Losing them will forever impact many lives.”
Friends of the teens also described the tragedy as senseless.
Kelsey Brogan, Theouk’s friend, told KING 5: “This did not need to happen, this should not have happened.”
