Father faces a charge of abuse of a corpse after keeping his son’s body in the kitchen for almost four years.
David McMichael, 67, from East Texas, was being booked into the Bi-State Jail in Texarkana on Wednesday afternoon on a charge of abuse of a corpse. He is suspected of keeping his son’s body in his kitchen for almost four years.
Police in New Boston made the surprising discovery Tuesday afternoon when they went to McMichael’s home and learned he had kept the remains of his dead son in his kitchen for at least four years.
According to a news release, it was about 5:10 pm on March 29, Tuesday when a caller asked New Boston, Texas, police to check on the welfare of a male in the 1200 block of South Merrill Street.
The police department said Police officers from the suburb of Texarkana were called to check up on Jason McMichael. When they arrived at the scene, they were met by his father, David McMichael.
When authorities asked McMichael if he knew why they were at the house, the man reportedly answered that it was because of a body in his kitchen. He also told police it was his adult son’s body, and that his son had died in May 2018
Police then entered the home and found male skeletal remains inside. Authorities arrested McMichael and booked him into the Bi-State jail on an “abuse of a corpse without legal authority” charge.
A police statement posted on Facebook reads: “The officers on scene made entry into the home and found the skeletal remains of a male. A short time later, David McMichael was then taken into custody without issue.”
The Texarkana Crime Scene unit and New Boston Police investigators got a warrant and investigators determined the human remains are possibly of Jason McMichael’s. There’s no mention of the son’s age nor of the cause of his death.
The body has been released to Mid-South Transport and was taken to the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas for autopsy and positive identification.
Authorities said the body was taken to the South Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas for an autopsy and further identification. David McMichael is currently at the Bi-State Jail. No other charges other than the aforementioned have been set.
New Boston is roughly 20 miles west of Texarkana, Texas, and 155 miles northeast of Dallas, just west of the Arkansas border.
