The Golden Girls star Betty White passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 99 and the cause of death has been listed as a ‘cerebrovascular accident’.
According to TMZ, the actress suffered a stroke six days before she died. While strokes can cause long-term disability and lasting brain damage, sources said that the beloved sitcom actress was ‘alert and coherent’ after the incident.
A source also told People that White had ‘mild stroke,’ adding she ‘died peacefully in her sleep.’
White’s passing was announced by longtime agent Jeff Witjas, who then told The Associated Press that the actress hadn’t been suffering from any condition.
“I truly never thought she was going to pass away,” he said
“She meant the world to me as a friend. She was the most positive person I’ve ever known.”
Before her death, the star had participated in a movie celebrating her 100th birthday. The producers of the film ‘Betty White: 100 Years Young’ said after the heartbreaking news that they ‘will go forward’ with their plans to release the movie on January 17.
“My 100th birthday… I cannot believe it is coming up, and People Magazine is celebrating with me! The new issue of @People is available on newsstands nationwide tomorrow,” White wrote on Twitter.
President Joe Biden led tributes to the iconic star, writing: “Betty White brought a smile to the lips of generations of Americans.”
Writer John Leavitt also joked: “You gotta admit, having an entire magazine devoted to your 100th birthday hit the racks and then dying before that birthday is excellent comic timing.”
Pete Souza tweeted: “She made us laugh. Thank you Betty White. RIP.”
