A 3-month-old girl tragically died only two days after her mother and older brother were instantly killed in a horror crash.
34-year-old Katrina Sila and 2-year-old Kai Prahastono lost their lives when their car plowed into a cement truck on a motorway southwest of Sydney, Australia.
Ivy, 3 months old, was airlifted to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead where she clung to life for two days.
According to reports, their dad, Ian Prahostono, was at work when he received an alert on his Apple Watch about the severe car crash.
He spent the last two days watching little Ivy in the hospital while grieving the loss of his wife and son.
Police said that the mother and her children were driving to the family’s home in Denham Court when the incident occurred.
She reportedly tried to make a U-turn from an emergency bay on the Hume Motorway when she hit the cement truck.
Ambulance NSW Superintendent Mark Gibbs said paramedics experienced confronting and challenging scenes.
“It is hard to think anybody did survive that wreckage – such a tragic and high-speed incident,” he said.
Gibbs also believed that the baby car seat Ivy had been strapped in had initially saved her life.
“It shows how child restraints work in such tragic circumstances.”
Police are investigating the incident and will prepare a report for the coroner.
The truck driver was not injured and underwent mandatory alcohol and drug testing.
In a statement, the heartbroken family said: “We are heartbroken to announce the sad passing of Katrina Sila and son Kai … a loving daughter, mother, devoted wife, sister and friend to many.”
